I ran the Cheesehead Half Marathon on August 25, 2012. As with all the races this summer, it was really hot.
Ryan and I went on Friday night to go pick up our packets. His sister, her fiance, and Ryan were running the 5k and I was doing the half-marathon. The packet pick-up was very quick and we were in and out in about 5 minutes. That night we went out with a few of his friends and stayed out until 11:30. Great start to race weekend. Carb-loading, right? :p
My dad came with me to the race, seeing it was going to be so hot and my mom was worried. Used the porta-potty and then started the race.
The race is ran in Hilbert, WI, which is a very town in the middle of nowhere. All of the race was ran on country roads with little/no shade. I ended up starting too fast and my shin started hurting again. I had to stop and rub it a little and then take it VERY slow the next two miles. This all happened in the first 10k of the race. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The only time there was shade was during the section where we ran on the Fox River Trail. I was feeling pretty good during those miles and ran at a good pace there. Once I got back into the sun though, I was dying. It was so hot and I just wanted to be done. The last mile is all uphill. Ryan ended up meeting me during the last half mile and really pushed me. He asked me how I was feeling and I said that I was going to throw up. He really didn’t say much after that and just kept running at a pretty fast pace. When we got about .10 from the finish me left me and I finished.
My time was 2:13:50, which was about the same as the Cellcom. I definitely could have ran a smarter race and maybe have had a better finish. But I was still happy with my time. I came in 2nd in my age group, so that was exciting. I was not expecting that! Instead of medals, they give you fancy cheese for age group winners.
I think I will run this race again because it is pretty close to my house and not many people participate. I could see myself doing much better in the race next year.
