2012: Running

2012 brought a whole new adventure in running. I went from not being able to run at all in January, to completing my first full marathon in September. A few injuries along the way, but a great running year.

Total miles ran: 915

Total races: 10

Awards won: 2

5k’s

DSCN4936Run 4 Home. Second in age group

Oshkosh 5k.

Fox Firecracker 5k. 5k PR

Packers 5k. Ran with my sister.

5M’s

Festival Foods Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving

10k’s

Bellin Run

15k’s

Noodleini 15k

Half-Marathons

Cellcom Half-Marathon

Cheesehead Half-Marathon. 2nd in age group

Marathons

Fox Cities Marathon.

The majority of my races this year were ran in the summer and this summer in Wisconsin was HOT! It seemed like every time I had a race it was ridiculously hot. I did a lot of my training in the afternoon after work, which I think helped in these races because it was obviously hotter in the afternoon. Most of my runs took place on the Fox River Trail, either near my house or in DePere. I also ran quite a bit on Saturday’s with my running group.

I had a great racing season in 2012 and I expect 2013 to bring even BIGGER races and accomplishments 😉

Cheesehead Half Marathon Race Recap

I ran the Cheesehead Half Marathon on August 25, 2012. As with all the races this summer, it was really hot.

Ryan and I went on Friday night to go pick up our packets. His sister, her fiance, and Ryan were running the 5k and I was doing the half-marathon. The packet pick-up was very quick and we were in and out in about 5 minutes. That night we went out with a few of his friends and stayed out until 11:30. Great start to race weekend. Carb-loading, right? :p

My dad came with me to the race, seeing it was going to be so hot and my mom was worried. Used the porta-potty and then started the race.

The race is ran in Hilbert, WI, which is a very town in the middle of nowhere. All of the race was ran on country roads with little/no shade. I ended up starting too fast and my shin started hurting again. I had to stop and rub it a little and then take it VERY slow the next two miles. This all happened in the first 10k of the race. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The only time there was shade was during the section where we ran on the Fox River Trail. I was feeling pretty good during those miles and ran at a good pace there. Once I got back into the sun though, I was dying. It was so hot and I just wanted to be done. The last mile is all uphill. Ryan ended up meeting me during the last half mile and really pushed me. He asked me how I was feeling and I said that I was going to throw up. He really didn’t say much after that and just kept running at a pretty fast pace. When we got about .10 from the finish me left me and I finished.

My time was 2:13:50, which was about the same as the Cellcom. I definitely could have ran a smarter race and maybe have had a better finish. But I was still happy with my time. I came in 2nd in my age group, so that was exciting. I was not expecting that! Instead of medals, they give you fancy cheese for age group winners.

2nd in Age Group!!

2nd in Age Group!!

I think I will run this race again because it is pretty close to my house and not many people participate. I could see myself doing much better in the race next year.

Packers 5k Race Recap

This race took place on July 28th in Green Bay and I signed up to run it as a fun run with my sister. It was the kick-off to the Green Bay Packers season.

I was a little nervous about this race for a couple reasons.
–I had ran 15miles with my running group that morning. So I was a little worried about being tired with sore legs.
–I didn’t get a lot of sleep the previous night.
–The weather (of course) was a bit hot, even though the race started at 6:30 p.m.

The race started where the Cellcom started, right in front of Lambeau Field. It started at 6:30 p.m. but it was still a little warm. There were a lot of runners, seeing it was a 5k.

The race route ran around Lambeau and some surrounding neighborhoods and then through the tunnel at Lambeau and out to the finish. It got quite clogged going into the tunnel and around the outside track because people were taking pictures and the track is only so wide, but it was still a cool experience.

We finished in 33:14 and had a really fun time! I definitely enjoyed running this race with my sister.

Sidelined…Again

Seriously, maybe I should just plan injury into my training plans. This is just getting ridiculous. At least this time it’s not my knee (although then it might be an easier fix).

Monday: I had scheduled 4miles. I went to my normal spot and started out. I felt okay the first mile, but then mile 2 started and my shin started to hurt. Bad, bad, bad. I ended up walking back and ending my run.

Tuesday: 7miles scheduled, but I wasn’t sure if I could run them. So I planned on testing out the first mile and see. Yep, stupid shins. So I quickly scheduled a chiropractor appointment because he helped my knees and then I went to Runaway Shoes and purchased some expensive awesome compression socks. I iced and compressed like a motherf’ker last night.

Wednesday: I wore my less expensive awesome compression socks to work today. Fashion diva here. And then went to the chiropractor where he tortured my shins (because, you know, I have shin splints). Went to the YMCA instead of running and even the bike hurt. So I did LOTS of weights. Taking out my aggression.

My plan for the rest of the week:
Thursday-rest. I have an appointment tomorrow after work and I’m going to just come home and rest, compress, and ice, ice, baby. It’ll be a grand time.
Friday- Day off of work, so I might go the YMCA early in the day because I have things to do in the afternoon. We’ll see how the rest day goes tomorrow.
Saturday- Sad to say, but I probably won’t be going to my running group. YMCA is again on the plan. Though there is a trail that runs right in front of the Y, so, if I’m brave, I may try out my shin on there.
Next week- All next week I’ll be up north. I plan on bringing my running clothes, but if my shin isn’t better, I’m going to walk a ring around the lake. Walk, walk, walk. Stretch, stretch, stretch.

So that’s the plan. I’m really frustrated because my training was going so well, but I’m doing everything I can right now to get back in the game.
