2012: Running

2012 brought a whole new adventure in running. I went from not being able to run at all in January, to completing my first full marathon in September. A few injuries along the way, but a great running year.

Fox Cities Marathon.

The majority of my races this year were ran in the summer and this summer in Wisconsin was HOT! It seemed like every time I had a race it was ridiculously hot. I did a lot of my training in the afternoon after work, which I think helped in these races because it was obviously hotter in the afternoon. Most of my runs took place on the Fox River Trail, either near my house or in DePere. I also ran quite a bit on Saturday’s with my running group.

I had a great racing season in 2012 and I expect 2013 to bring even BIGGER races and accomplishments 😉

Fox Cities Marathon Race Recap!

I ran the Fox Cities Marathon on September 23, 2012 and it was my first marathon!

I’ll start on Friday. That was the packet pick-up/race expo and it was a little crazy. The expo was at Fox Valley Tech, where I go to school. I got there a about 10 minutes early and had to stand in line outside before it opened. When they let us inside, getting your packet didn’t take much time. The expo itself was a little confusing the way it was set up. I only bought my new 26.2 magnet and a t-shirt. The official race shirt was handed out AFTER the race.

Saturday I laid around the house and didn’t really do anything. Rested my legs. That night I went over to Ryan’s and he made me spaghetti. I was getting nervous and I just wanted to run the race already! My parents had scouted out a place to watch me and Ryan was also going to be at the finish line.

Sunday morning came and I was REALLY ready to go. However, despite the weather I had been running in all summer, it decided to be about 30 degrees. Hello?! So I ended up wearing a long sleeve shirt and capris. I know some people hate running in capris, but I really enjoy running in them! My mom brought me to the start and I told her I would see her in 4 hours!

The race started right at 7:00 a.m. and the marathon and half marathon started together and then split at mile 2. I was feeling really good at the beginning. I tried to start off slowly. Because it was cold, I took water at every other aid station and alternated water and gatorade. That worked out really well the whole race. I used the bathroom at mile 12, but only because there wasn’t a line.

My parents were at mile 9 and they were a welcome face. There wasn’t a lot of crowd support, but enough to keep you going.

I was at the halfway point at 2:09:31, which is about 4 minutes faster than my half-marathon time! Now I really want to run another half!

I don’t really remember a lot of the middle miles. It was mostly just me and my thoughts. “Keep going!” “Enjoy yourself!” “You only get one first marathon!”

My upper thigh really started hurting about mile 18. I wanted to walk, but I did not want to walk. It was a little internal struggle. I kept trucking along and knew I was halfway done. Then I started to get familiar with the route and I kept focusing on that. Counting down the miles and knowing what was waiting for me at the finish: my parents and Ryan and my medal.

We ran passed the hospital where I went to when I had dehydration in February and I felt so lucky to be able to run this marathon. I knew I had to finish strong. I only had 2miles left. After running over the bridge by the Neenah public library, it was the part of the marathon route that I had pictured so many times during my runs. I had ran that road when I lived in Neenah and now it was the finish to the race.

Ryan found me when I ran passed the park and I said, “I’m almost done!” And he said, “You are and you’re doing great!” I kept going and only had a half mile left at that point. Just through the park and to the finish. He met me again right by the finish and wanted me to run faster! I could barely run my legs were so tired! He was yelling, “You can pass those people ahead of you! I know you can!” I picked up the pace and did pass them and finished. I got my medal and warming blanket and went to find him and my parents.

My time was 4:22:23 and I was more than satisfied with that time! I wasn’t really hungry, but I did have half a banana.


First Marathon!

Once I was home, Ryan and I looked at the results and I was pretty much average in every aspect of the race: age group, females, overall, finishing time.

I can’t wait to run another marathon. It was hard at some points, but I had a really fun time. And of course I want to beat my time 🙂

June Summary/July Goals

June was a pretty successful month. Juneathon, friends, running. It had it all! Let’s see if I accomplished any of my goals for the month and make some new goals for July!

June Goals:

–Juneathon: Accomplished. I worked out every day, logged it, and blogged about it. I tried new things and I feel a lot better with my body.

–More strength training: I would consider this accomplished. Going to the YMCA helped me with this. I was able to use different machines there and use heavier weights there too. Welcome back, strength training 🙂

–Running Group: Accomplished. I met with them every Saturday (except the Saturday of the Bellin Run). I also went to one of their fun runs and to the monthly meeting. Everyone in this group is so positive and encouraging.

–Sign up for the Fox Cities Marathon and one other race on my schedule: Big time accomplished! I was able to sign up for the Fox Cities Marathon at a discounted rate at the Bellin Run race expo and I signed up for the rest of my races this summer.

–Go to the YMCA and take a spinning class: Sort of accomplished. I joined the YMCA, but I didn’t take a spinning class. I usually go to the Y on Friday’s and there aren’t classes offered on Friday’s. But I usually make an attempt to get on the bike while I’m there.

–Take more pictures: Accomplished. I managed to get to the Appleton Botanical Gardens and I took more pictures family functions this month and when I hung out with my friends.

–Visit one friend: ACCOMPLISHED!! I visited my friend, Tom, in Madison last weekend. And this weekend I was able to see him again, along with my other friend, Ella! Yay! Those were two of the best weekends and I hope I am able to to more stuff with them the rest of the summer.

–Finish one book: Epic fail. It’s really hard for me to read anymore because I don’t get any breaks at my job. At Walmart, I used to read on both of my 15min breaks and during my hour lunch. But now I really don’t have time when I get home because I have other things I want to get done.

June Summary:

–Ran in the Bellin Run! It was a lot of fun, despite the heat.

–Got new hours at work. 7am-3pm. It’s nice to get done an hour earlier, but getting up at 5:30am sucks sometimes.

–Started watching the new Dallas series. So far, so good!

–After seeing my uncles Ironman tattoo, I started thinking about maybe doing a triathlon in the future.

–I started taking three more multi-vitamins and I feel awesome.

July Goals:

–Take a spinning class this month: Maybe I can accomplish this goal in July

–Keep going to my running group: I would like to get some friends in my group. That was one of the reasons I joined was to make running friends.

–Get my school stuff straightened out: Look at my schedule, do my FAFSA, lame stuff.

–Keep visiting friends: I hope I can continue to see my friends and maybe see my cousin this month too!

–Start thinking of where I could work once school starts: ugh

–Attempt some speed work into my training

–Write out my schedule for the upcoming week on Sunday night

–Continue to keep up on blogging: with Juneathon, I had to blog once a day. It was hard some days, but not impossible. I don’t want to blog every day, but at least three times/week.

This month my family and I are going up north for a week, so I’m not sure how many of these I will be able to accomplish, but we will see!!

Juneathon Day 30: Out with a Bang!

Well, it’s the last day of Juneathon and it conveniently landed on my longest run since the half-marathon!

I was really nervous going into this run. My last 12mile run was really hard and I didn’t want a repeat performance. So I went in thinking about going slow and not worrying too much about my pace/time.

I met up with my running group again and we set out at 7am. I always seem to start out too fast when I’m with my group, so I tried to start near the back, with no success. My first mile was pretty fast.

The second mile and half of mile 3 were probably the toughest until the last two miles. I’m not sure why, I just didn’t feel right. But then I got into a pretty decent rhythm and it was smooth sailing from there. Literally, I felt awesome miles 3.5 to mile 10. My pace felt decent, I wasn’t straining to keep the pace I was going. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

There were two water stations and since this week’s route was an out and back, we hit each one twice. I brought along a packet of sport beans and a Peanut Butter Gu (I hadn’t tried that flavor yet. SO GOOD!). I took the beans whenever I felt like and I took the gel at mile 8. The first and last water stations I took water and the second and third I took Gatorade.

On the route this week there were TONS OF HILLS!! Oh my gosh, so many hills. And not just little hills either, these were pretty big hills. And since it was an out and back we had to do these hills TWICE. Gah! So lots of practice with hills this week.

Miles 10 and 11 were tough. It was getting pretty hot. I always try to kick it up a notch that last mile, but it was really hard.

Overall, I’m really happy with this run. I was thinking about being in the  pace range of 9:40+ but all but two of my miles was above that, which I’m very happy with. If today would have been my half-marathon, I would have killed it.

Juneathon Day 23: Running and Walking

Yesterday I had my Saturday morning group run. After last week’s bad 10miler, I was a little nervous about this one. This week was only 7miles, but I was still nervous.

As usual, I got to Runaway Shoes at 6:50am, but I made sure to use the bathroom BEFORE we started running. Lesson learned from last week. While waiting for the port-o-potty, I chatted with a guy about running schedules and which distance we were both doing. He said he was a novice and asking ME about this stuff. I’m a novice myself! This is my first marathon, so I’m still learning. But it was cool to talk compare schedules with someone else too.

We did our stretches and then headed out. This run was so.much.better than last weeks. Complete difference. I felt full of energy and ready to go. This route was actually the same route we did three weeks ago, but most of the routes we run are on the Fox Cities Marathon race course. So it’s nice to get familiar with the terrain.

There were water stations at miles 3 and 5. I took water at the first one and Gatorade at the second. The last time we ran this course, I pretty much followed one guy the whole time. I tried catching up to him, but he was always the same distances in front. Surprisingly, I followed him this time too. Deja vu. This run felt a lot better than that one though. Maybe we are both getting better, haha.

Oh yeah, I beat my 10k PR on this route too. 57:01! Yay!

When I was done, I quickly grabbed a piece of bagel and left because I was heading down to Madison to visit my friend, Tom.

He showed me around Madison and I had a great time! We walked all over State Street and by the lake. The weather was absolutely perfect. Needless to say, it was a great Saturday 🙂

Juneathon Day 9: Bellin Run 10k Recap

This morning was the Bellin Run 10k and it went really well!

Friday, my sister and I went to the expo, which was held in Astor Park in Green Bay. It was really hot, but the booths were all under tents, so it wasn’t too bad. I picked up my bib and t-shirt. This was the first race I’ve been in that’s used Corrals, and I ended up being in Corral 3. Then we did some browsing around and shopping. I was able to register for the Fox Cities Marathon and it was $10 off the current registration price! $60, I’ll take that. I also bought some white shorts and a blue Bellin Run shirt.

This race isn’t capped, so there were roughly 18,400 people running. The largest race I’ve been in so far.

I got home after the expo and got all my things together. The chip for my shoe had the race name and date on it! I thought that was pretty fancy!


The race didn’t start until 8:00am this morning, so I got up at 6:00 and ate a banana, a Clif Bar, and drank some water. My dad and I left at about 6:30. We were able to find a decent parking spot and then we walked to Astor Park.

My aunt was running too, and we found her out of 18,000 people!

She was in Corral 1. Speedster.

Around 7:35 we migrated over to our corrals. I gave my camera to my dad (he’s not that great with technology) and went to wait for the start.

Next to me in the Corral was a guy with a shirt that said “Bellin Run Legend”. I wanted to talk to him, but I was too nervous shy. The Bellin Run Legends have ran in all 36 Bellin Runs. That’s a pretty good accomplishment! Their bibs were red, instead of the color corresponding to what corral you were in.

At 8:00 the race started and my dad caught a few pictures of the first groups of people (which was great because I never get to see the start!)

My Team Triumph

This organization lets kids and adults with disabilities participate in road races, even if they can’t run. The disabled person, known as the captain, is pushed or pulled through the race by their angel. My Team Triumph has been in three of the races I’ve done (Oshkosh, Cellcom, Bellin).

I crossed the start line at 8:08. The course is laid out well. It goes through Green Bay and then through some residential areas. The only downside was that there wasn’t a whole lot of shade. When it’s 75 degrees, everyone was looking for shade. There was one stretch where there were NO TREES AT ALL. It was super hot and no aid stations on that road either. A few hills, but nothing too steep. Lots of spectators. Radio stations were at almost every mile marker. There was energy (and people) everywhere.

For this race, I really wanted to beat my 10k time (57:34). I used a pace calculator that I found online to figure out what I’d have to run for a solid 57:00. This morning I wrote them on my wrist so I would remember. Even though it was supposed to be hot, I’ve ran in the afternoon since my half-marathon and I think my body is getting better running in the warmer temperatures.

I started out slowly. I was feeling pretty good. The heat wasn’t TOO bad yet, and this was the part of the course with shade. Because it was only 6.2 miles, I didn’t plan on taking water/Gatorade at every aid station. I planned on stopping at 2. Also, like the Cellcom, residents were encouraged to put out sprinklers.

That first mile was a little crazy. There were obviously a ton of people to weave around and I just couldn’t find a decent pace. I was trying to not go out too fast. It was hard. Mile 2 seemed to fly by, probably because it was downhill. I took some water at the aid station around mile 2. Mile 3 was kind of a blur. I think that was the part with no shade. My time at the 5k point was 29:05.

I took some Gatorade around mile 5 and I think I lost some of my speed there. The water stations were really crowded. There were also a lot of kids participating in this race, and they always ran in groups. It was hard to weave around them and most of them were running sort of willy-nilly.

Whenever I’m training and I have mile 1 left, I keep repeating that in my head. I countdown that last mile “3/4s to go!” “Halfway done!” “You’re so close!” Well, I definitely did that during that last mile. As we got closer to the 5.5 mile mark, there were more and more spectators. I knew the finish was so close. That last bit I was just running on pure adrenaline. Running for a new PR. It felt great! I missed where my dad and uncle were standing, but my dad caught a picture! Yay!

I ran fast, fast, fast to the finish and I did beat my 10k time! By 16secs! That first mile was slower than I wanted, but I’m still happy with my new PR!

Once you crossed the finish line, there was a LONG walk back to the park. There were people handing out water and you could get a finish photo for free. I got a photo and then my aunt and I got one together too.  We went back to the park, but it was getting really hot, so we left.

Overall, it was a good race, even with the heat. The crowd support was great. The water stations seemed to have plenty of water and there were extra precautions due to the heat. The only downside to this race is the amount of runners on a 10k course. Some of the bigger half-marathons have about the same amount of runners, but those runners can spread out over 13.1 miles. Over 6.2 miles, there isn’t a lot of space for people to spread around. So that was the only downside to not having this event capped.

I’m happy with my new 10k. And it was my first 10k! Next up (once I register) is the Firecracker 5k on the Fourth of July!

May Summary/June Goals

I want to start making summaries of months and goals for the next month. To see my progress and changes in my life. Also, to think about things I wish to accomplish.

May 2012 Summary

–Ran my first double digit runs. No stopping me now!

Ran Survived the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon: it was hot. Some people didn’t get official times. I was lucky enough to finish and have my time counted. Rockstar.

–Signed up for the Bellin Run 10k

Nike+ watch took a poop. Had to buy a new one.

–Started my MARATHON training

–Got a new job! Good bye Walmart, it’s been a great 2.5 years.

–Moved back in with my parents. Hoping to save money so I can move out on my own and be a grown up.

–Changed my blog’s name

LOTS of changes in May. Things coming to an end and things just beginning. It’s been a roller coaster of emotions. Highs and lows. Good times and bad. But now that month is done and onto June!

June 2012 goals

–JUNEATHON: It’s begun! (day 1 and day 2) This month will be full of fitness and fun (and sweat)

–More strength training: I’ve been really slacking in this area of my cross-training. Hopefully with Juneathon I will get back into more of a routine. There have been some great work outs posted in Women’s Health that I want to try out.

–Running Group: I did my first group run this morning and it was fantastic. I will definitely keep going to them. I know the Fleet Feet store in Appleton also does group runs that I am interested in and I would love participate in those as well.

–Sign up for the Fox Cities Marathon and one other race on my schedule: I would like to sign up for the Marathon this month before the price goes up. And to sign up for either the Firecracker 5k or Packers 5k.

–Go to the YMCA and take a spinning class: We’ll see.

–Take more pictures: I take pictures for Project 365, but I want to be taking more flower pictures. I went to the Green Bay Botanical Gardens last month and I would like to go to the Appleton Gardens in June.

–Visit at least one friend: I want to visit my cousin, Amanda, in Madison. Or my friend, Tom, who also lives in Madison. Maybe I could visit both! Awesome.

–Finish ONE book: I know this is a sad goal. One book? Really? Yes, I know at the beginning of the year I had set the lofty goal of 25 books, and I really don’t see that happening, due to the fact that I’ve only read two books this year. I’m going to start with this one book goal for June and see what happens.

Juneathon Day 2: Group Run

I went to my first run with the running group I joined!

Each Saturday until the Fox Cities Marathon in September, they do training runs to help people get prepared. There are routes for the half-marathon and full marathon. It’s free to participate and there are refreshments after and even water stations along the course!

I was really nervous going this morning because I didn’t know anyone. I have done two races the PaceSetters have put on (St. Joe’s and Run 4 Home) and they always do a nice job.

When I arrived at the meeting point (Runaway Shoes in Darboy), the lady who was in charge was really nice and told me what I needed to do. I had to sign a waiver and told me that there were Port-a-potties at the side of the building. Also, there were little ID holders that we used to put the directions of the route in. I thought that was a good idea, so no one would get lost.

After some group stretches, we were off and running at 7:00. I forgot to start my watch right away (nervous), and I ended up starting a little faster than I would have liked. Oops. And I sort of got caught up in the moment. It was almost like running a race with all the people (about 50), so it was a little exciting too.

There were water/Gatorade stations at miles 2.5 and 5.5 along the 7mile route. I was sort of using this run as a practice run for the Bellin next Saturday. After the first mile or so, people were pretty spread out and I stayed behind the same person the whole time. I didn’t run with anyone, but that was okay. I just got lost in my thoughts. It was a nice morning to run and I hope the weather is this nice next Saturday.

Right after the last water station, I thought I had a rock in my shoe. It actually turned out to be a huge hole in my sock and my foot was painfully rubbing my shoe. It hurt so badly. That was the only time I stopped (besides the water stations). Two guys caught up with me then and we finished about the same time.

Bagels and grapes were set out for us when we got back, along with water and coffee. One of the guys that caught up with me, came up to me and said that it looked like I had a good run. They followed me the whole time and my pace was dead on the whole time, except for when I checked out my shoe pain. I thanked him and then he went to go get some water. That made my day! I am always worried about my pacing. Going too fast, too slow, going all over. Best comment.

Next week I won’t be able to join them, because I’ll be running the Bellin, but I’m hoping to go every week. I would love to make some running friends. Everyone today seemed really friendly and helpful.

Fitness Friday: Recovery Week

This week has been really good! My legs were SUPER sore on Monday. Even walking up a little incline to get into my work building hurt. I sit almost all day at my new job, but on Monday I was able to stand and work at the shrink wrapping machine and I was sort of glad to stand and stretch out my legs. I think if I sat too long my legs would have gotten stiff. My chaffing is gone, but I did buy some body glide so it doesn’t happen again. Live and learn.

I FINALLY signed up for the Pacesetters running group. FINALLY! I’m really excited. They do weekly runs and they do training runs for the Fox Cities Marathon. I hope to make some running friends 🙂

Here is how my work outs have been this week:

Monday: Rest! All I wanted to do was sit and rest.

Tuesday: Elliptical for 30min. I was a little nervous, but my legs were okay.

Wednesday: First run! 3 miles on the Fox River Trail. I had planned on taking it slow and easy, but there was a runner in front of me at mile 2 and I just had to catch him. And once I was running at a decent speed, I couldn’t slow down.

Thursday: Strength training, we meet again. I have been slacking on strength training lately and it makes me sad because I really enjoy it! I never look forward to it, but once I get going, I love it and never want to stop! I did a work out I found in this months issue of Women’s Health (which I just got May’s issue, it’s almost June already!)

Friday: 4 miles. Felt REALLY good and strong during this run. I tried to chase someone again and it worked well, haha. It was the perfect running weather today. Warm, but with a little breeze. Beautiful.

Overall, it’s been a great week! I’m planning on running 5 miles tomorrow and then I’m spending time with my cousin! Yay! Sunday=rest day. Monday is the start of my MARATHON TRAINING! BRING IT!

11 Days

11 more days! 5 mile run tomorrow and a long run on Friday and then it’s taper time!

My long run last Friday was decent. I figured out that when I don’t sync my Nike+ watch everyday, it doesn’t link with the satellites. Boo. So, needless to say, I used the stopwatch feature for that run of 11 miles. I ran on a trail that went past a few roads, so every road I went over, I tapped the screen and made a lap. Then when I got home, I figured out the distance between the roads and figured my pace out that way. Lesson I learned: sync up my watch, haha.

Saturday morning I did 5 miles just to shake out my legs and because I didn’t get my miles in, due to the tremendous amount of rain we got last week. I didn’t really care about pace, I just ran to run.

Yesterday I tried out a different running spot and I enjoyed it. It was the CE Trail in Kaukauna. Although it went through a couple major roads, which I always hate stopping at. Flat in some places, hilly in some places, good overall. I did 5 miles.

Today I did a pace run on my normal running route and it went well! I didn’t go out too fast, I got in a groove right away and just went for it. And I had a little steam left over for the last 0.5 miles to really run fast. I’m still hoping to hit that 2hr mark and I think I can do it. I said in this post, that I want to run the half with the 2hr pace team, and I still plan on doing that.

I’ve gotten back into strength training and it’s been amazing. I feel so much better running when I strength train before than when I just go run. Maybe I will have to do something like that before the half.

I’m still deciding on what I want to wear for the half marathon. Yes, that is the least of my worries, but I love picking out clothes for special occasions! I bought two new pairs of running shorts at Target and they are fantastic. I really just need to decide on the top yet.

Payday is Thursday and that is when I’m paying for my next two races: the Bellin 10k and the Fox Cities MARATHON. Oh man. Once it’s paid for, that’s it. No going back. I’m pumped 🙂
